How We Built Performance Max Dayparting and AI Negative Keyword Automation for Google Ads
Google does not offer ad scheduling for Performance Max campaigns, and competitor-brand searches quietly drain PPC budgets. Here is how we built automations that fix both across every Google Ads account we manage.
Google Ads gives advertisers a powerful platform, but some of the controls campaigns actually need are simply not there. Two of the biggest gaps we kept running into for our clients: Performance Max dayparting is not built in, and competitor-brand searches quietly drain budgets in every account. So we built our own automations to close both gaps. Here is how they work.
The Problem: Performance Max Has No Built-In Ad Scheduling
Standard Search campaigns have supported ad schedules for years. You can bid up during the hours your customers actually convert and bid down overnight. Performance Max dayparting, however, is not an option in the campaign UI. The automated campaign type Google now steers most advertisers toward does not expose dayparting controls. A PMax campaign runs around the clock at the same daily budget, whether your best leads come in at 10am on a Tuesday or never on a Sunday.
The common workaround is pausing the campaign during slow periods. That is a mistake. Pausing a Performance Max campaign resets the machine learning signals it depends on, and performance can suffer for days after it resumes. You save a few dollars overnight and pay it back with interest all week.
Our Fix: Performance Max Dayparting by Budget, Not by Pausing
For a dental practice serving the St. Augustine, Florida area, we built a scheduling script that never touches the campaign’s on/off switch. Instead, it adjusts the Performance Max daily budget up on the days that historically produce booked appointments and down on the days that do not. This approach delivers Performance Max dayparting as a budget signal rather than an on/off signal, so the campaign’s learning graph keeps compounding.
The campaign stays live and keeps learning. Spend concentrates where conversions actually happen. And nobody has to remember to flip anything on or off, because the script runs on its own schedule.
This follows the same rule we apply to all of our Google Ads management: client campaigns never go dark during business hours. Our 24/7 bidding system for Search campaigns works the same way, adjusting bids by hour and day of week inside strict safety caps, bidding down instead of shutting off. Both campaigns rely on the same budget-weighted dayparting logic, so Performance Max dayparting rides on the same rails we built for Search.
The Other Budget Leak: Competitor Brand Searches
Every service business account has this problem. Someone searches for “ABC Dentist” or “ABC Fencing,” Google matches the query to your ad because you sell the same service, and the click costs you money even though that searcher was always going to choose the business they typed in by name.
Catching these terms manually means combing search term reports week after week. Most agencies do it quarterly at best. We automated it.
Our Fix: LLM-Reviewed Negative Keyword Automation
Across every Google Ads account we manage, recurring automated jobs pull the latest search terms and pass them through a large language model trained to spot queries that name a specific competing business rather than shop for a service. Flagged terms are minimized to their shortest distinctive phrase and added as exact-match negative keywords to a shared negative list.
A human reviews the output before changes ship, and the automation files a review task so nothing lands silently. Clients stop paying for clicks that were never going to convert, and the negative lists get smarter every cycle. The same review queue that flags competitor-brand terms can also catch queries that surface after a Performance Max dayparting budget shift, since the search-term mix tends to evolve when the spend pattern changes.
Why We Build Instead of Wait
These two systems run alongside the rest of our paid media infrastructure: automated bid management with per-cycle change caps, audience layering, and a custom integration that pulls Google Ads and Google Analytics data straight into our reporting pipeline, feeding scheduled performance reports without manual exports.
The pattern is the same one behind everything we have built since restructuring the agency around AI: when the platform does not offer the control our clients need, we write it ourselves, put safety rails around it, and keep a human reviewing everything before it ships.
The paid and organic sides feed each other, too. The same search term data that powers our negative keyword automation informs our search engine optimization work, so pages get built for the queries that actually convert.
What This Means for Your Campaigns
If your Performance Max dayparting is non-existent (your campaigns run the same budget at 3am Sunday as they do at 10am Tuesday), or you have never scrubbed competitor-brand terms out of your search reports, there is measurable spend on the table. This is exactly the kind of work included in our PPC packages, from search and display through Performance Max.
